Gimileo is a Spanish municipality located in the autonomous community of La Rioja, in the north of Spain. It is located in the district of Haro, in a privileged area for wine production, as it is in the heart of the Denominación de Origen Calificada Rioja.
The D.O.Ca. Rioja is one of the most important wine-growing areas in Spain, known for the quality and variety of its wines. Rioja is divided into three sub-zones: Rioja Alta, Rioja Baja and Rioja Alavesa. Gimileo is located in the Rioja Alta, a sub-zone characterised by its Atlantic climate and its clay and limestone soils, ideal for the production of high quality wines.
The most widely grown grape variety in the Rioja is Tempranillo, which is used to produce full-bodied and complex red wines. Other varieties such as Garnacha, Graciano and Mazuelo are also grown. In addition, white and rosé wines are also produced in the Rioja, although in smaller quantities.
In the Gimileo area, as in the rest of the Rioja Alta, you can find numerous wineries and wine cooperatives that offer guided tours and wine tastings for tourists. In addition, the village celebrates various wine-related festivals throughout the year, such as the Fiesta de la Vendimia (Harvest Festival) in September.
